Psalm 46

Confidence in a World of Chaos
The Lasting City
God’s glorious heavenly city is one of the great themes of Scripture. It is
depicted as the place where He dwells in majesty and where his saints
reside in peace spiritually this side of eternity – with the expectation of
entering full residence on the other. When we scan the earth and see
“natural” disasters, read headlines about nations in turmoil, hear reports of
havoc in our cities, and even when we face personal calamity, we do not
have to fear if we belong to the Lord. No matter what, our God reigns, and
he is our constant help. When we lose perspective and feel overwhelmed by
the state of affairs of a tumultuous fallen creation we can turn our eyes to
the Lord of hosts and know for sure that He, our God, is always with us. Our
faithful forefathers had eyes that looked beyond their sometimes
troublesome journey and the troubles of this passing age and they
persevered. They could not yet see Jesus and the fulfillment of all the
promises of God but from afar. Bu we see King Jesus high and lifted up, the
Lord of Hosts, reigning and ruling over his redeemed citizens and in Him we
have received all the promises of our great God. And therefore we who fear
God, like those who have gone before us, can go forward fearlessly on our
journey of life in the face of whatever may come to pass with an even
greater assurance and fuller confidence.
Hebrews 13:14-15
Here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.
Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God,
that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.
