Philippians 3:10-12

Dying to Live

Good Morning Self
You may have read the little quip that’s been passed
around here and there. The narrator talks about what a
wonderfully sanctified day they had had so far … then they
have to get out of bed. Well, our sin life is a little more
complicated than that, but there is some truth in the ironic
reflection of a hopeful sinner at the beginning of the day. The
fact of the matter is we can wake up and walk through the day
with a joyful bounce in our step – after all – if we are in Christ we
are alive in Him! However we still deal with that nagging reality
of indwelling sin. Therefore there is a dying that still needs to be
done. We need to die each day to the ways of the old man
and strive to put on the ways of the new. We must depend on
grace for this, but at the same time we are to be complicit in
what is called our “sanctification.” With the help of the Holy
Spirit we die to sin and live unto righteousness. We have not
arrived at perfection yet and we will not until we step into glory
and are made like Him. In the mean time we press on in
obedience because we belong to the one who suffered and
died to take away our sin.

Q. 35. What is sanctification?
A. Sanctification is the work of God’s free grace,
whereby we are renewed in the whole man
after the image of God,
and are enabled more and more to die unto sin,
and live unto righteousness.
