Genesis 14:17-24

King of Salem

Mystery Revealed
The Lord has just one a victory through Abram in the Rescue of Lot when out of
the blue a mysterious figure shows up on the scene. The men break bread, a
blessing is bestowed, and Abram gives him a tenth of everything. The record in
Genesis is very short and simple. Yet at the same time, as it turns out, the
incident has long lasting implications and the individual named Melchizedek
turns out to be a significant figure in the history of redemption. This brief
encounter is far more complex than first meets the eyes and proves to be a
major signpost in the revelation of none other than Jesus Christ Himself. There
are three key pieces to the puzzle. Genesis 14, Psalm 110 and Hebrews 7. As we
link these pieces we get a better idea of what Jesus means when he says:
“Abraham rejoiced to see my day.” As we delve into the solved mystery we will
appreciate more the interwoven and complex nature of God’s design as laid out
in Scripture from beginning to end and better still we will see more clearly the
glories of the Lord Jesus, the priest forever and the King of Righteousness and
Peace.
